NYC SALSA is the incendiary sound of Latin New York and that’s what you would be wearing here. In 1970, Latin music in the USA was a crossroads. It was on the verge on breaking out of the barrios of New York and into the wider American musical mainstream, and then on to conquer the rest of the world! Latin music was about to transform itself into “Salsa”,. This marketing makeover would unite all the different strands of Cuban, Puerto Rico, Colombian, Venezuela and Dominican dance music under one banner. Latinos Unidos! When the disparate national genres, musical styles, rhythms and dances came together as one, it gave Latin music the muscle and power it had lacked previously in the music industry. The word “Salsa” made sense to non-Latinos whether in Texas or Japan – five simple letters that made a short, easy to pronounce word, which looked fantastic in print! In Spanish, “Salsa” was a sauce made up of many different ingredients, just like the music! Brilliant! “Salsa” would become global music phenomena and at least for the 1970s, New York City would be its capital!
