|DJ Spinna "Future Shock" Mix CD and T-shirt
Brought to you by 101 Apparel
For our exclusive mix/t-shirt series we invited the one and only DJ Spinna from NYC to provide us with a set of sounds culled from his legendary music collection. Spinna is an internationally renowned selector, musician and producer who worked with all the heavyweights of the golden-era NYC hip-hop scene ( Gangstarr, Brand Nubian, Jungle Brothers) and who transitioned into a top tier remixer who has crafted dozens of dancefloor classics that span disparate genres from soul, funk, disco, house and afro music. For all his contributions to the music industry, it’s amazing that he has been able to become master the art of being a dj, something that many producers flirt with but rarely command with such dedication, style and creativity as Spinna has. His now legendary WONDER- Full parties ( all Stevie Wonder, all night long) have been so popular in NYC that he had to tour them to other cities ( SF, LA, Tokyo) and has since birthed other tribute parties with a similar theme. For “Future Shock”, Spinna put together a mix that looked to older vintage sounds with a distinct space-age futurist aesthetic in mind. It’s a journey through funky, forward, thoroughly retro-modern sounding tracks with a focus on the future and one foot in the past. The design is also reflective of that aesthetic with the text “Future Shock” in large vintage lettering.
Throughout my years of digging for records I've always been particularly drawn to music that is heavily influenced by the electronic revolution. There was a long stretch where I would specifically hunt for Moog, New Age, Jazz Fusion, & experimental records... anything that involved synthesizers, but still had a groove. Upon the inquiry from 101 Apparel to come up with a concept for a mix my initial thought was it has to be unique. It was the opportune time for compiling tracks from past to present that capture the electronic experience. Future Shock is born and is without a doubt one of the most brain crushing mixes I've ever done! I hope you dig it.
